1840 Strand Road

Refurbishment of 1840’s seafront villa.

The new design of the house was based on its engagement with the garden, centring the focus of the interior on the family kitchen table and a set piece of carefully designed one-off fittings which are inspired by and bespoke to the house, its history and its setting. At ground level each window is a considered bespoke piece, the function determining its relationship to the exterior. Pivoting windows open the garden in for the summer months, a bi-folding facade slips over a sheltered bench and fixed windows frame the views to the surrounding landscape. Collected shells and stones from the seafront are cast into the custom-built concrete countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, bringing the landscape directly into the house.

New green technology, such as solar water, rain water recycling and Heat Recovery Ventilation is carefully integrated into with the original fabric, maintaining the character of the original dwelling while providing a modern and sustainable home.
