A little bit about Andrew & Gearóid

Graduating from UCD Architecture in 2003 Andrew Brady has worked in design led award-winning practices in both Australia and Dublin. As well as being a recreational furniture maker, Andrew has professional experience in architectural model making. He formed the partnership with Gearóid in 2009.

Having gained a variety of experience in Architecture working in Dublin, Chicago and Sydney Gearóid Carvill, who graduated from UCD in 2000, established private practice in Dublin in 2007. Gearóid is a Registered Architect, a full member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (MRIAI) and a qualifed Conservation Architect, Grade III.

abgc architects are a Registered Practice with the RIAI.

We see design as having both aesthetic and function and that every piece of building construction has design possibilities in itself and in it’s wider context. We are happy to spend an afternoon at our drawing board on a gate-post, a hopper head or a tiling layout if that’s what it’s going to take to make any given project work. We understand that our clients homes or office need to be as individual as they are. We also understand that our designs have to be lived in, touched, felt, smelt, cleaned, kicked, wetted, worn, dirtied (and cleaned), dirtied (and cleaned again) for many, many years after we’ve gone.

As well as Domestic Extensions and House renovations and refurbishment, we design for Restaurants, Cafés, Shops, Boutiques & Hairdressing Salons, Art Studios, all from concept through completion; we’re working with Advertising Agencies and Telecommunication Multinationals finding unique solutions on specific projects for each client. We know what we don’t know and where the situation demands it we involve other consultants, be they specialist fabricators, Ecological Consultants or Structural Engineers to ensure we, and you, get the best advise and the right expertise. We work with other designers too; landscape and interiors, fashion designers and graphic designers. We’ve successfully completed numerous Planning Applications, Conservation Reports, Fire Safety Certificates, Grant Applications for Sustainability and Disability. We have work at all stages of construction currently on our books and are assembling a portfolio of fully realized projects that demonstrate our skill, knowledge and commitment to good design.

The practice was established with the aim of devoting 20% of working week to self directed non-commissioned projects, in areas of research and design including; furniture design & fabrication, exhibition design & installation, photography and other projects. All subjects that we believe are related to architecture from a holistic point of view. This non-commissioned works has lead directly to commissioned projects in the same areas including exhibition design for ABSOLUT Vodka and furniture & installation design for ‘Music from Ireland’ funded by Culture Ireland & the arts council. In this way we have added a number of additional skills to our core architectural services. As the self-commissioned work migrates into the paid work, our self-directed projects continue into other areas.

We, (Andrew and Gearóid) both began our professional work experience the late 1990′s and bring almost 30 years of design and project management experience to every project. We are registered practice with the RIAI. We offer a full-service, multi-discipline, approach to the realisation of every design. We do not just produce ‘drawings’ – we design, and we use drawings, sketches, models and photographs, with built full scale samples, written specifications and other media to execute a project from inception through contract and construction to realisation. We can give you our client list and let them tell you.

We love, Moorish Tile patterns, Barcodes, WWII Dazzle Painting, Duchamp, 1:6 Furniture, Salad gardening, Allotments, LeCool, Georges St, the Boardwalk, Bicycles, Albert Frey, Cardboard Cut-outs, Fractals, Salvage and Reuse, Conservation, City Wildlife, Stop Motion Animation, Tarnished Brass and Worn-Soft Hardwood, Dublin, Mountain Biking, Charles and Ray Eames, Tag & Rugby Union, Irish Cheese, Home Made Bread, Paul Auster, Raymond Carver, Everything by Robert Hughes, Barcelona and Madrid, the use of COR-ten steel in Girona, Sir John Soane House, Tao of Pooh, Frans Masereel, Irish Church Architecture.

We love talking about ideas. Building and improving our environment and your environment is exciting. We are excited about the possibility of talking to you. Give us a call.

We work here!

abgc are based in South Studios, a creative hub, comprising a variety of freelancers including, Fashion Stylists, Photographers, Graphic Designers, Illustrators and Publishers.

South Studios combines office space, with photography studios and exhibition spaces totalling about 14,000 sq.ft.

abgc’s working environment provides direct access to a range of other skill sets and leads to collaborative projects and commissions in both their architecture and design work. The project for the Irish Blood Transfusion Service was developed with Sean and Yvette photography, an exhibition installation for fashion designer Eilis Boyle was developed with stylist Aisling Farinella.

The studio space has also allowed abgc develop a construction workshop where the team build specific projects and develop ideas for all aspects of their work. The Lego table for ‘boys and girls’ and screening room originally for the Irish artist Clodagh Emoe, which was installed in both IMMA and the Grand Canal Theatre, were both built in-house.

In 2007, South Studios was founded by Clíona O’Flaherty and Yvette and Sean from seanandyvette photography on the top floor of 27 New Row South.

The idea behind the formation of South Studios was to create and interesting and functional work environment for freelance creatives and also to offer a large studio rental facility for photographers, film-makers and designers working in Dublin.

27 New Row South is a c170 year old building sited on the Poddle River (it runs under our carpark) , it forms part of Dublin’s relatively inconspicuous Industrial Heritage which dates back to the middle ages. It originally the home of the City of Dublin Brewing Company and part of a complex of distillery buildings, now mainly converted to apartments. The last century saw its development as a tannery as part of Dublin’s Jewish community which was extensive in Dublin 8 in the 1950s.
By 1975 the premises were being used by the current occupants, P.A. Stapleton & Son, as a wholesale distribution centre.

The history and original features such as Victorian beams and period windows give the building immense character, making it a very creative space to work and shoot in.

Over the centuries Blackpitts has become the home for every faith and persuasion from the Hugonauts and Jews to Quakers, Distilleries to Tanneries and more. It’s part of Dublin’s Liberties (actually the Liberty of St. Thomas) and has been an Industrial area since the mid 17th Century, which predates the development of the docklands. We’re right beside the Coombe and Meath St but fortunately far from penny apples.

It’s still one of the least developed parts of the city centre, and there’s an industrial undertone, substantially working class community which is complimented by cheap space and entrepreneurial activity.
